Harry was baptised at Winslow by the pioneer Luther pastor, C.W. Schürmann, on February 2, 1859, and was later confirmed at Murtoa by Pastor C.G. Hiller. His early life was spent on his parents' farm at Winslow near Warrnambool, where he probably worked after leaving school.
Harry was 15 when his family moved permanently to Marma Gully (Murtoa) in the Wimmera in 1873. At first he would have lived and worked with his family on his brother Fred's block, north of Lake Marma, until after 1875. Then the family moved south of the lake to Ashens where they lived on his brother Ned's block (until 1881), later moving to his father's own selection next door. It is probable that all the family blocks at Ashens were farmed collectively in the early days.
In 1882 Harry's father, Johann, purchased 320 acres from his neighbour, John Deutscher, at Ashens. Subsequently he sold his original selection to Harry; and when Harry married, Johann moved onto Deutscher's former block to farm with his youngest son August. As with his older sons, Johann assisted Harry to become established.
Annie Uhe was 12 when she arrived at Marma Gully, in March 1872, from Mount Gambier. Her parents were among the first party of four families to settle around the lake. The previous year her father had selected land at Marma Gully, just three weeks before the Adlers arrived; and like the Adlers, he became a foundation member of St John's Lutheran Church, Murtoa. Harry and Annie were married by Pastor Hiller.
All the difficulties of early pioneering life were experienced at Ashens, but Harry overcame these to become a successful farmer. After his brother August married in 1888 Harry's parents moved back to his block where they built a small house. They were living there in retirement when Johann died.
Harry's mother, Christiane, continued living there until Harry sold the farm in the 1890's and bought Breen's original selection closer to Murtoa. August then moved Christiane's house through the fence to what had been Ned's block, but which he had since purchased.
Harry successfully farmed his second property until 1924 when he built a new house in Hamilton Street, Murtoa, and retired into the town.
Harry and Annie were life-time members of St John's Lutheran Church, and Harry was a lay-reader for over 40 years. He was a valued member of the Murtoa Agricultural Society for many years and in the 1880's was involved in the Murtoa Oddfellows Lodge.
A quiet and well-repected man, Harry died at his residence a month before his 81st birthday. Pastor C.G. Siegle conducted his funeral service.
Annie died in Horsham Hospital nearly 5 years later, aged 84 years. Apart from her husband, Annie was also predeceased by her elder daughter, less than 12 months before her own death. Pastor J.M. Larsen officiated at her funeral.
Vallie and Linda Adler lived with their parents at Ashens and in Murtoa. Linda continued to live in Hamilton Street after her mother died. She let rooms in her house, before being admitted to Murtoa Hospital. Later she left Murtoa to live at the Lutheran Rest Home in Horsham.
