Herb owned land in the Lalbert district before he enlisted in the 1st AIF in July 1916. He was a Lance Corporal and served in machine-gun corps in England, France and Belgium.
Herb was killed in action in Belgium at a place called Dochy Farm, a short 12 months after sailing from Australia. He is buried in the New British Cemetary, Langemarck, Ypres, Belgium.
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, and his name is recorded on the honour role in the Lalbert Hall and the Swan Hill cenotaph, and at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
