Carl Wilhelm was the fourth child of Carl Gottlieb Uebergang and Johanna Eleonora Peucker. He married Caroline Mibus on April 25, 1865 at Tarrington after having spent some time as a teamster carrying supplies to the gold diggings at Ararat and Ballarat. He eventually saved enough to purchase land at Hawkesdale where his mother joined him, probably in 1870 when he and his wife moved into Tabor to live.
While Carl and Caroline lived in Tabor, they and their grandchildren assisted in the construction of the Tabor Lutheran Church, and he and his descendants played a leading role in nurturing and maintaining the congregation there.
