Story: Johann Carl Uebergang (1833 - 1918)

Carl was the third child of Carl Gottlieb Uebergang and Johanna Eleonore (nee Peucker). He was born on November 19, 1833 in Bersdorf, Prussia. He first farmed with his family at Warrnambool, Victoria, and then farmed at the Cape Otway forest in New Zealand. After coming back from New Zealand he farmed at Hawkesdale, Vicoria. He married Marie Albert of Penshurst, at the Lutheran church, Croxton East, by Pastor Emil Darsow, in 1897. From 1898 until his death in 1918 he and his wife lived near Penshurst. Both are buried in the Gnadenthal cemetery, near Tabor, Victoria. As they married late in life, Carl being 64 and Marie 40, no children were born. Carl, in his obituary, was described as a man 'of a quiet unassuming nature' and he was highly respected by all who knew him.
