He boarded the Great Britain at Liverpool with his sister Jane aged 14 years on 8 December 1862 arriving at Melbourne on 27 March 1863. On board the same ship were James - aged 27 and Mary Ann Oldroyd - aged 28.
Joe Horsfall married Jane Anne Battersby, daughter of George and Jane, at St Saviours Church of England, Tarnagulla on 1 December 1875. The family eventually settled at Kooreh where Horsfall, a blacksmith, died on 17 July 1889 aged 43 years. His widow married Alf Hamilton.
